Batavia Beat Student News Site of Batavia High School Wed, 04 Mar 2020 18:11:31 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Madden NFL 20 Review Wed, 04 Mar 2020 18:11:31 +0000 Released August 2nd, 2019, Madden 20 came to the market on XBOX 1. PS4, and Microsoft windows featuring this year cover athlete Patrick Mahomes.

Following the Broken and glitchy Madden 19, Madden 20 fixed some of the issues in this year’s game. Madden 20 has also brought back the pro bowl. Superstar X-factors were also added in this year’s game. Superstar X-factors are what separates a decent player from a great player by giving the player realistic abilities they are known for in real life.

Madden also added “Face of the Franchise” similar to the longshot mode in the last 2 maddens but with a different story. Your character you created has to be a QB. The story starts out at a press conference where you pick the college you want to go to. You then play a couple of games in college, then there’s the combine you participate and based on how well you performed you will either get drafted high or low.  Finally the cutscenes are over with and you just play NFL games for the rest of your career.

The last new mode Madden added was Superstar Knockout. Superstar  a game mode that combines Superstar X-Factors, custom rules, and unique teams with celebrities that can be the coach of your team such as DJ Khalid. Superstar K.O. also added a new unique stadium and commentary style to provide a brand-new play experience you can’t get from any other mode.

EA “The developer of Madden” did not really make any new or massive changes to the modes Ultimate Team, or Franchise.

Personally I think anyone who likes football will mildly enjoy what madden has to offer. The graphics have improved since last year’s game, so has the depth of players and their stats with the help of the Superstar X-factor abilities. The greatest thing I can say about this year’s game is It’s a step in the right direction for the madden franchise.

One of the biggest downfalls of madden this year is there overall lack of depth in all modes. After college in “face of the franchise” There are no more cutscenes at all. To make matters worse they did not add anything to the mode `Franchise”. Last but not least The last problem that I and many others have is the fact that EA again abuses the power with Microtransactions. “Microtransactions are a very small financial transaction conducted online”.

If I had to Give Madden a rating on a scale of 1-10, 10 being great I would give it a solid 6. I felt like EA could have done better but me summing the game up by saying the game is a step in the right direction is just perfect.

Baseball 2020 Fri, 21 Feb 2020 18:31:11 +0000 With the 2020 ball season rapidly approaching and both baseball and softball coaches figure out rosters, schedules. I sat down for an exclusive interview with Batavia’s baseball coach Geoff Carter to talk about the upcoming season. Coach Carter has taken part in the Batavia high school athletics for the past ten years, and a world history teacher for the past nine years.

Head varsity coach Geoff Carter

As the interview started I thought it would be a great idea to ask about the previous baseball season, just the basic high and low parts of the entire season. Coach Carter states that the team started out kind of slow with a really young team, but then states by the end of the season they found themselves with a winning record. Coach Carter describes the season as a “learning process to find out who plays where, with the help of 4 really great seniors.” As we go into the lows of the previous season coach Carter talks about the sectional tournament game against Clinton Massie. The bulldogs really thought they would do well and win the game, but coach Carter states they didn’t “show out, it was kind of a dead game”. Over all the bulldogs ended their previous seasons being 13-7 which is a pretty good season. As well as the rest of Batavia athletics in the SBC American league. The bulldogs will also go against schools such as; Clinton Massie, Goshen, Bethel, Western Brown, and many others. Coach carter then states that almost all of those schools lost important players like pitchers, and Batavia didn’t really lose any key players. Coach Carter also states “that this season is time to actually be back on top of the league.”

As everyone in the bulldog community knows we never fail to show our bulldog pride especially when it’s against our rival Williamsburg. Coach Carter then discussed how the bulldogs play Williamsburg every year for the dogs senior night. Coach Carter then states that in the 10 years he’s coached the bulldogs they haven’t had a loss against Burg. As we move forward Coach carter then talks about how its always been a “good game” against the wildcats and he also states there has been “close games” against them. Last season Coach Carter talks about how the bulldogs couldn’t go against burg for the first time because of weather and the games being rained out.

A new field, a new season, new teammates, all in all coach Carter shows enthusiasm for the upcoming season. As the bulldogs prepare for the season with conditioning and open field coach carter states “we couldn’t have done this if it wasn’t for the new field because of how much it rains.” The turf fields bring so much to the table for the team’s potential and preparation. Coach Carter then talks about what he’s seen throughout the time the bulldogs have conditioned, and then states “I definitely see a winning season”. Coach Carter then states he hopes to be where the dogs used to be with the league championships and advancing in the tournaments.

Coach Carter then talks about the upcoming season with the statement of having 18 home games and 8 away games, with that being said coach carter calls this and  ́ ‘advantage”. New season calls for new players whether it’s a new freshman player or someone from another grade within the high school. Overall coach Carter has very high hopes for the upcoming season. Coach carter then talks about his now sophomore players with “having a year under their belts” and the upperclassmen that have been playing that they have a very strong team. Even though they lost 4 very good batters from this past year’s graduating class. Coach carter then states he believes they’ve gotten better and he states “the rest of the league is coming back to the pack”.

Education is a major role in every student’s life especially if you plan to play any sport through school. Coach Carter talks about education being first before sports and then talks about keeping grades above a ‘C’. coach carter then states “we have a policy where if you wish to try out and have an ‘F’ you won’t make it”. This just goes to show grades do matter if you wish to do anything within the schools athletic program. With this being said being a current history teacher coach Carter has time to really get to know his students. He’s with them in the same place for eight hours and sees them throughout the day whether it’s in class or in the hallways. Coach carter talks about how he drives them to have good grades and he states it is “so much easier to know grades, keep tabs on them, and get to know them”. Overall the hopes are high for this upcoming 2020 baseball season. Don’t forget to come out to some games to show your bulldog pride and support our athletes.

Do Your Scores Matter Less to Universities than Before? Fri, 21 Feb 2020 13:51:23 +0000 As March approaches, students are scrambling to prepare themselves for the ACT, hoping to get a high score. They take practice tests, ask teachers to cover test material in class, and study for weeks. Some have already taken the test, or are retaking certain sections in order to take advantage of the recently instituted “superscore” concept, in which the ACT averages the best attempts out of all four sections out of all attempts. Others, such as a significant portion of the junior class, are taking the test for the first time.

Students have always been told that the ACT is a dealbreaker. If a student gets a bad score, they can say goodbye to getting into a decent college or university. If they get a good score, their chances of getting into said school are increased significantly by how high they scored.

However, recently, teachers, college professors/students, and recruiters have noted that admission test scoring is becoming less significant as time goes on. Some colleges and/or universities do not even require a student to provide scoring for the ACT or SAT. Recently, colleges and/or universities have been focusing more heavily on extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, class rank, and common app essays. Even simple things such as scheduling a college visit, talking with admission officers, or attending an enthusiastic interview can show recruiters how much you want the opportunity to attend, and make a good impression.

Of course, overall GPA, grades in CP and AP courses, and test scores hold considerable importance to admission officers, so this information does not mean that students should be nonchalant about the ACT and SAT, but it does mean that getting an average or below average score on the tests is not going to be the end of the world or nullify your academic career. Colleges look for more than just test scoring, and will be favorable in considering other factors in terms of why it would or would not be beneficial to them to have you representing their campus or alumni.

Seasons From Senior Perspective Wed, 19 Feb 2020 17:22:29 +0000 Sport seasons are coming to an end for Seniors at Batavia High School. As football and soccer came to a closing, Basketball players geared up in preparation for their season. For some, it will be their last.

Returning basketball player Jeff Shepherd says that basketball is something that he will miss more than anything. “One of the best parts of being in high school is being close with my teammates and doing something I love everyday.” said Shepherd.

After graduating, Shepherd hopes to work for his dad and hopefully one day take over the family company.

“We may not have had many wins this season, but getting to play with my friends and having those experiences is the most important part.” says Jeff.

Shepherd had an extravagant game against Clinton Massie where he had sixteen points, four rebounds, and he was 100% on each and every three point shot.

Congratulations to the players for the accomplishments of the Batavia High School Men’s Basketball Team. The Seniors will be missed.

The XFL Wed, 19 Feb 2020 17:19:26 +0000 The XFL is back and better than ever!  The XFL made its first appearance for the first time in 19 years with different teams and different rules.

The XFL was first founded in 1999 By Vince Mcmahon’s but two years later in 2001 The XFL hosted its first game. The XFL received about 14 million outstanding views on opening day. Unfortunately with each and every game after opening day the views dropped and The XFL only lasted for one season.

However on January 25, 2018, Alpha entertainment announced the full return of the XFL. The first game of the XFL was played this past Saturday when The Seattle Dragons faced off against the DC defenders on the channels ABC and NBC which brought in approximately 3.30 million viewers to tune in to the first game of the season.

Will the XFL stick around for more than a season, were not sure but however we do know that the XFL started strong right out of the gate.

Are there any new rules you might ask?  The answer is yes! Instead of nicknames on the back of jerseys it will be the players last names like it is in the NFL. For another example after a team scores a touchdown they can put up the extra point, two point conversion and an additional 3 point conversion. There’s also other newly added rules as well.

We asked a student from Batavia Highschool “Tyler Shouse” a couple of questions. “What do you think of the XFL currently? ” Tyler said “The games start of very boring but slowly gets better”, Sounding confident. “Do you see any potential in the XFL” Tyler said fast “depends”

The last question I asked was how long would the XFL last and to my surprise he said “as long as the AFL”  Which the AFL only lasted a season.

Basketball Senior Night Thu, 13 Feb 2020 14:45:31 +0000 On Thursday February 11,2020, the BHS mens basketball had their senior night.

The senior night they filled the gym with support to show support to the seniors who have been working for the past 4 years to improve in their athletics. Each of the seniors was named and got to walk through the “SENIOR” balloons and they were honored.

The game for senior night mens basketball was against Clinton Massie, it was a very intense and competitive game. The end of fourth quarter ended as an overtime with a tied score. The overtime as it went on still stayed the same as the tied score. The game ended up going into a second overtime and the Bulldogs pulled out a win of 69-72.

The boys ended the senior night with hard work and determination, and a positive memory to remember the last game for the seniors playing on the BHS gym floor.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Review Mon, 03 Feb 2020 14:17:16 +0000 As the last movie in the saga, it has had a lot of mixed reviews on it. With excellent acting, but not the most amazing story line. People have said that it was the most imperfect ending for the Skywalker series. And I agree. In my opinion it was the best within the trilogy and I really enjoyed the whole storyline. In the movie, you see the continuation of Rey’s journey to become a true Jedi, and as she does just that. She is interrupted to go on a mission to thwart Emperor Palpatine before he can raise the first order, and turn Ben Solo to the dark side for good. Yes, I did find that it was rushed in some parts. But the emotions the actors were able to bring to the table was incredible. And the talent in the movie was insane. Adam Driver, who plays Ben Solo, also known as Kylo Ren, to me stole the show. With Drivers amazing talent, and the constant fight between the dark side, and his title as Kylo Ren. Or the light side, where he is Ben Solo. It was portrayed beautifully and impressively. The chemistry between Drive, and Daisy Ridley (Rey), fit the whole movie so well. And made the end hit ten times better. With the whole fight to who will get who to switch sides, a large bomb was dropped about Rey’s family history. And the audience discovers that she is truly a Palpatine. To me, it wasn’t even expected to see that happened made me interested and left me wanting more of a backstory to Rey’s parents and want holes from previous films to be filled with this discovery. But all in all to me the movie was very good, and a very fitting end to the trilogy. The ending, like in all movies was the best part. And left you wanting more, but also feeling content with what you were given.

BHS Absence Rates: How Does Healthcare Play a Role? Fri, 31 Jan 2020 19:24:19 +0000 The Winter season at Batavia High School has been marked by a noticeably large number of absences, early dismissals, and late arrivals. It seems that there is a contingent of Batavia students that is reluctant–or perhaps unable–to have regular attendance, and administration and staff have wondered whether it’s simply a spell of common colds or other illnesses, or if there may be other factors at play.

“Well, absences are high because, especially this time of year, of health concerns. But a lot of it comes from students not being motivated enough,” says Assistant Principal Darren Stevens, when asked to comment on the subject. Stevens deals with most of the attendance data, and therefore is put in the position to schedule meetings with parents and the student to discuss declining attendance rates once a student reaches a certain amount of missed hours. He explains that his priority is to always discuss the underlying reasons for declining attendance before resorting to filing truancy charges.

Absences in January

This chart shows the absences at Batavia High School over the month of January.

On average, fifty students were absent per day in the month of January alone. The numbers of absences on a daily basis steadily remains at around 49 students on average. The highest percentage of absences is approximately 12%, and the lowest being 6%. Many worry that the steady percentage of absences could possibly be a consistent group of students that are missing school on a regular basis. This raises the question; is there more that the school district could do toward assisting students with issues that might contribute to absences, including things like mental health or lack of transportation?

When asked if it could possibly be an underlying issue with mental health, and whether changes need to be made in terms of protocol to deal with mental illness among students, Stevens says that there is only so much a school district can do to aid a mentally ill student. “We deal with mental health the best we can with the resources we have,” says Stevens. “The problem with a lot of school resources, is that the help that people need is outside of the school.”

Batavia High School, along with the Elementary and Middle schools, have an in-school Child Focus associate to aid students with mental health when needed. Weekly meetings can be scheduled, but with the amount of students that need assistance, and the limited amount of free time to delegate towards said students, not everybody receives an equal amount of time for counseling.

There is only so much help that a student can get from school resources; therefore, the best option for a mentally ill student would be to seek outside resources. However, not every parent has the insurance, economic ability, transportation, etc. to seek counseling for their child. Whether physical or mental illness, the impact of health care on students and their attendance will continue to be a factor for the school.
